Hello Everyone,

The DVA is seeking drivers to assist in helping our local veterans get to doctor appointments and other services in the Portland area. They are looking for local drivers to drive the DVA vehicle from the veterans home here in The Dalles to the VA hospital in Portland. If you or someone you know would like to help, please call 503-272-5042. They will require a valid driver’s license, clean driving record, liability insurance, a back ground check and pass VA health screen/physical.

I’m hoping we can get a few volunteers from our lodge to help with this very worthwhile project.

Thank you for your support of our veterans, and remember “Elks never forget our Veterans”

Fraternally yours,
Mark Riter, ENVSC chair.

Jason Hull of Maupin Advances to Elks Hoop Shoot National Finals

Chicago—Over the past nine months, tons of young athletes from the across the country stepped up to the line to show off their free throw skills through the Elks Hoop Shoot. Only six will become National Champions.

Jason Hull is one of 72 of the nation’s best free throw shooters ages 8 to 13. Jason’s hard work and dedication has taken him from Maupin to the Elks Hoop Shoot National Finals in Chicago.

Last fall, Jason joined 8- to 13-year-olds across the country who competed in the 2017 Elks National Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest. Jason advanced through the local, district and state levels of competition, sinking the most of 25 free throws in his division at each contest. With a score of 22 out of 25 at the Northwest Regional Semi-Finals, Jason secured his chance to shoot on the foul line at the National Finals.

The Elks Hoop Shoot National Finals tip off on April 22, 2017, in Chicago—home to the Elks National Headquarters. At the contest, the 72 National Finalists will compete to sink the most of 25 free throws and claim the National Championship. One boy and one girl in each of three age-groups will earn the prestigious title and have their names permanently inscribed on the Hoop Shoot plaque in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.

Funded by the Elks National Foundation, the Elks Hoop Shoot has been developing gritty kids for more than 40 years, installing characteristics that lead to success, on and off the court. Stay connected during the final leg of Jason’s Hoop Shoot journey. Send Jason an e-greeting to show him that he has the support of his community. Visit enf.elks.org/greetings to send an e-greeting before April 12.

On April 22, follow Jason’s progress from home using the live Elks Hoop Shoot shot-tracker. Visit elks.org/hoopshoot to access the shot tracker on April 22, read the latest Hoop Shoot news, and learn more about the Elks Hoop Shoot. The Hoop Shoot is just one of the many opportunities the Elks offers for youth. For more ways the Elks are serving the community, visit elks.org/who.

Nov. 11, 1911

The three days Elk's dedication ceremonies came to a close yesterday, when the hundreds of visiting Elks returned to their homes. The occasion was one of the greatest events in the Dalles history, fully 1,000 of the antlered herd being in attendance. Everything in connection with the dedication progressed with marked preciseness, and the various committees on arrangements deserve the highest praise for the thoroughness of their work. Nothing was overlooked and all the visitors were splendidly cared for during their stay in The Dalles. Many visitors voiced their compliments in regard to The Dalles and the manner in which the big dedication was handled.

The Portland Elks, who came here Saturday for the dedication of the new Elks home, Kidnapped Chief of Police R.R. McDonald when they started for home Sunday afternoon and took the local official to Portland with them. He returned to The Dalles at noon today, none the worse for the wear and entirely satisfied.
